Request for Volunteers: Cleanup at Siksika July 9 – 12

Canada Bridges needs your support in the form of volunteers and supplies for Siksika Nation.

Description:  Canada Bridges requires 30 volunteers DAILY to help with demolition and clean up of approximately 150 houses in Siksika, following the flood.

Time:  Help is needed from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m DAILY

Location:  Deerfoot Sportsplex, Hwy 901 and Hwy 547.  The volunteer check-in is at the high school beside the Deerfoot Sportsplex. The Deerfoot Sportsplex is the building with the red roof at the 901 and 547 intersection, south of Gleichen. There are many signs to direct you upon arrival.

Note: This opportunity is approximately an hour outside of Calgary.

This volunteer opportunity is for adults only — no children, please, given the nature of the work required.

Additional details:

  • Volunteers will be assembled into teams upon arrival and dispatched to various parts of Siksika.
  • Teams will assess each home, remove goods/furniture/appliances and tear out carpets and drywall as needed
  • Please bring your own food and drinking water.

Special requests: Specific skills are not required for this work, although experience with construction work is a valuable asset. Volunteers are expected to bring their own rubber boots/work boots, gloves (also bring latex gloves, if possible, to fit inside work gloves to protect from water), work clothes (and coveralls, if possible), and a change of clothes for the drive home. If volunteers have their own respirator masks, hardhats, safety glasses, they are encouraged to bring these as well. Dust masks will be provided.

Siksika Nation is also in need of volunteers with training in and/or experience with mold remediation, or other training related to effectively cleaning seriously flood-damaged homes.

There may also be contamination issues. If you are trained in this area, please let us know via the comments box on the sign up form.

If you have these tools please bring them:

  • Generators
  • Flashlights
  • Demolition equipment (sledge hammers, crowbars, hammers, drills)
  • Fans
  • Shopvac
  • Cleaning supplies (shovels, buckets, brooms, mops, bleach)
  • Moving supplies (boxes, containers, dollies, duct tape)

PLEASE NOTE:

  • Even though people register with YYCHelps, they still need to register onsite with the Nation. Canada Bridges is just working with the Nation to support the people interested in volunteering.
  • Volunteers will have to check-out as well for security and safety of volunteers onsite.
  • For any questions please contact the call centre at Siksika Nation: 403-734-5315 or 403-734-5396.

While you can signup with YYCHelps so we know when we have enough volunteers, DO NOT WAIT TO BE CONTACTED. Go straight to the address listed above in time for your shift.

Please sign up here for this volunteer opportunity.

Request for 50 Volunteers: Pump out basements in High River July 6,7

It’s go time! I have received 50 volunteer passes for our group to help pump out basements and help homeowners of this disaster. As of July 4th the passes may not be required but for safety reasons we will still be registering volunteers and reporting to High River officials of our efforts. Please RSVP to [email protected] for registration before 7:00PM Friday, July 5th, 2013

JH innovations Inc. will be officially leaving at 9:00 am July 6th & 7th from 444 Ogden Dr. SE. We will be car pooling to take fewer vehicles into the area. Expect to be in High River until about 6:00pm.

There are lots of ways that you can help us in the area. We will be going from home to home removing furniture from flooded areas then removing all waste materials and pumping any left over water. The final stage will be to clean the area so that the home is safe for residents until they can rebuild. We need people for the manual labour portion but we will also need someone to take the lead on food prep and organization for 50 people for 2 meals and snacks. If we end up with too much food or water that is not a bad thing as we do offer it out to the community we are working in.

With 50 volunteers we should be able to help over 20 homeowners a day if they are just getting in and about 30 if they all ready have their furniture moved out.
WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

When: July 6 & 7 9AM – 6PM

Sign up: Email [email protected] before 7PM Friday, July 5th.

Please come prepared to work. You require rubber boots, gloves, safety glasses, paper masks and respirators and you must be dressed in full-length pants and t-shirts.
