Ways You Can Help

Free Hugs For The East Village!

We don’t know when we’ll need you to volunteer for our community, but we will.
We don’t know when we’ll be able to collect donations for our residents, but we will.
We will need care packages, welcome home kits and plenty of man power to assemble them.
We are still under evacuation, we still do not have electricity, nor do we know when our residents will be able to return.
For those of you wondering how you can help, What we DO need from you right now are HUGS!
PLEASE write letters, cards, paint pictures and drop a sweet little “hug” into the mail that we can give to our 1200+ East Village residents, many of whom are seniors, when they return.
Let them know you’re thinking about them, sending them well wishes and that they are missed.
Help impacted flood victims, have you children, your school, church & community groups, and friends & family from all over the world send our seniors some hugs.
We will be collecting these cards and thoughtful notes and distributing them in our care packages when our residents are able to return to their homes.
Please send to:

  • Cleaning Supplies
  • Flashlights
  • Bug spray

You may drop any of these items off at Neighbourhood Link at 3751 21 St NE.

What To Do While You Wait

Your enthusiasm to help our city get back on its feet is contagious! Our database of registered volunteers continues to grow. While the City of Calgary and local authorities continue to assess needs and identify where help is needed, we’ve put together a few tips of things you can do to help in the meantime:

  • Make sure you’re acquainted with the City of Calgary’s Flood Awareness Booklet.
  • Gather any supplies you own listed on the Calgary Clean Up Supplies list.
  • Stay put. The less traffic that are on the roads, the better.
  • Share information via Calgary Clean Up, Flickr, and other social media sites about what you are seeing and experiencing. Links to relevant sites are listed under the Community Initiatives page on YYChelps.ca.
  • Help any neighbours/friends/family who need assistance with accommodations or cleaning up their private property if they’ve received news that it is safe to return home.
  • Stay tuned to YYCHelps.ca for volunteer opportunities, follow our Twitter Feed or check out Calgary Clean up on Facebook.
  • Encourage your friends, family, coworkers, etc. to sign up for our volunteer database at YYCHelps.ca.
